Galicia: Spain’s Garden Paradise

The region of Galicia, nestled in the northwest corner of Spain, is known as the ‘land of a thousand rivers.’ A rich abundance of water makes for lush vegetation and a seductively verdant countryside. Few other places on the continent of Europe offer such enticing landscapes.

This area was previously inhabited by the Celts and later the Romans. Vestiges of both civilizations remain entwined in the local culture, including the often heard lyrical serenade of the Gaita (bagpipes). Because of its lengthy stretch of coastal area, the local cuisine is rich in seafood, perfectly accompanied by the local vintage of Ribeiro wine.

The city of Santiago de Compostela serves as the region’s capital city, laying claim to the remains of St. James the Apostle. For centuries, pilgrims have flocked here, often trekking hundreds of miles across Europe, to visit the Cathedral which houses the Apostle’s tomb.

Other major cities in the region include: A Coruna, Ourense, Lugo, and Pontevedra.
